Collaboration
We share knowledge, experience, resources, and ideas because no single group can address conservation alone.

About the collective
BCI brings people, organisations, and institutions into a connected ecosystem for butterflies and their habitats.
Our purpose
Researchers, educators, citizen scientists, photographers, naturalists, conservation practitioners, schools, and local communities all contribute valuable knowledge and experience.
The Collective brings these efforts together to encourage collaboration, ecological learning, and collective action. We seek a future where conservation is strengthened through shared knowledge, meaningful partnerships, and deeper public engagement with the natural world.

Why now?
Across India, remarkable work is taking place to study butterflies, restore habitats, engage communities, and inspire a new generation of nature enthusiasts. But people working toward similar goals may be separated by region, institution, language, or access to resources.
BCI creates common ground: a place to connect, exchange ideas, learn from experience, and build projects that are locally relevant and nationally connected.
Our direction
Our vision is a vibrant and connected ecosystem of people, organisations, and institutions working together across India.
Our principles
We share knowledge, experience, resources, and ideas because no single group can address conservation alone.
We value scientific, local, cultural, institutional, and lived knowledge, and the people who carry it.
Our communications and activities are grounded in sound ecological understanding and responsible practice.
We welcome participation from across regions, communities, institutions, disciplines, and backgrounds.
Local communities and institutions should shape and lead action within their own ecological contexts.
The Collective is a space for open dialogue, reflection, generosity, and continuous learning.
A distributed collective
Members contribute in different ways—as knowledge partners, regional coordinators, community partners, educators, researchers, or volunteers. This distributed model allows local action to remain rooted in place while benefiting from shared experience across India.
